Remember, kids, the ball’s not dead
until the ref does call it so;
don’t wait around or think, instead,
just pick it up and go, man, go,
because there is no prize at all
for obeying rules that doesn’t exist.
Maybe you will trip and fall,
but no touchdown if you don’t persist
in scanning what is on the field
and looking for your breaks,
deigning not to stop and yield,
but doing everything it takes
in these days, your earthly time
to get the ball across the line.
Andrew, you NAILED IT! The PTB (powers that be) might assume your work is not “in play”, but only the ref can call it dead. And of course our ref is the Lord!
Another metaphor might be that you pick up and run with a topic, genre or form currently not courant (omniscient narrator? Mid-mod C. romance? Gloriously descriptive narrative?) and be a surprise success in independent publishing, while others are walking off the traditional pub field.

“Keep watch,” even when it feels all is going horribly wrong. That was painful.
Never give up even if everyone else thinks it’s over.
An agent decides to pass on a proposal, but waits to reply until after lunch. Later, at lunch with an editor, a discussion ensues about finding a story with a unique premise very similar to the proposal that was going to be passed over. The agent runs back to the office (It was a light lunch) and retrieves the proposal and contacts the author about representation.
Sometimes I feel like giving up, giving in
So hard I’ve tried and I never get the win
Beaten down by repeated defeat, I yield
I don’t see the ball at my feet on the field
On the field!? the ball is still in play!
There’s still a chance, another day
I can’t give up! So long I’ve tried…
Such is the plot of a writer’s pride

Your team is supportive even if they’re in your periphery
Your only obstacles are your own self-doubt and distraction.
The field is clear within God’s parameters.
Write, write, write, write,
And that dirty draft will count as a touchdown victory.
