God Bless her! She has learned the art to savor, anticipate, enjoy (and extend) the joy of the journey. Then finally, at last, she opens the top box and, voila, she so slowly and reverently picks up a copy. With closed eyes, heart pounding she takes a deep breath, and slowly opens them to read the title on the exquisitely done cover, “The Sleeping Dog”.
(Insert record screeching here).
THE SLEEPING DOG, whaaaaaaaaat! Really. Someone in fulfillment shipped “The Sleeping Dog”, MY book is “The Waking Beauty” she screams at the defensively cowering boxes at her feet. How dare they! Furiously she strikes out at the boxes and the opened case on top pukes its contents all over the living room floor as it topples. In this highly emotionally charged day she is compelled to indulge in a well earned uncontrollable sob. After all hope is abandoned for a flawless book launch she said a little prayer thanking God for what she does have and knowing that her precious life is in HIS hands. The guests and family coming this evening to her party, as well as the book signing event tomorrow, will just have to understand these things happen.
She dares opens her beautiful eyes, by now puffy slits, and, for a moment, with greatly blurred vision she imagined she saw a different color cover. This was also exquisitely done and proudly proclaimed “Waking Beauty” while lying there, uninjured, on the floor.
Lying next to it, innocuously, was an innocent little envelope made out of expensive paper with her name lovingly handwritten on its face. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand while continuing to suppress her convulsive weeping and took out the little note. She, quite shakily, opened it and saw that it was from her heroes, Steve Laube and company. It read.

The contents of this communique took a moment to sink in as she hysterically burst out in maniacal laughter and thought “Wow, do I have a lot to learn about publishing. It looks like there may be a lot more to it than just writing a great novel”. THANK YOU GOD!
