A perfect example of how to write a poignant short story. Chevrolet’s new Christmas video is a wonderful way to start the Advent season.

For some reason, this had an unexpected effect on me. I’m hesitant to post the sonnet below, because it feels kind of dissonant with the Advent season.
It’s for the ghosts looking through the window, the guys who, in body or spirit, never made it back.
They gather ’round the groaning table,
hold hands and sing beside the tree
and ignore as fiction, fable,
the war that flickers on TV.
It’s really all so far away,
and no-one knows the dead and dying,
and to court it, anyway,
might become mirror implying
that there’s shared responsibility
that we bear upon our choices,
that our privilege’s fragility,
and that perhaps our song-raised voices
might be used to now atone,
and welcome broken brothers home.

Steve, thank you. What a beautiful way to start December and the Christmas Season.
Blessings!
