This is what of God I’m learning,
this is something I believes,
that He gets up every morning
and jumps into a pile of leaves
with a whooping holy joy
that resounds among the hills,
and that’s the thing we should employ
to cure our own and others’ ills.
Grim piety just doesn’t work,
the hair-shirt makes the best of us
look like a dour judgmental jerk
who’s glad to toss beneath the bus
every semblance of a smile
that makes Creation feel worthwhile.
