What if that which we wrote
would somehow come to life,
and chase us down, a billy goat
brandishing a Bowie knife
of the harsh reality
across whose border we have trod
in hubris-toned banality,
thinking that we honour God?
Our tales are for amusement,
told at the childrens’ table,
and if we lose this pure intent
and think that we are able
to match God’s vision face to face,
He’ll gently put us in our place.
