You can write today’s date as 2, 23, 24 … Two. Two three. Two Four. It’s almost like a countdown to a song, which brings me to today’s “fun.”
This week, I was talking with a friend about a book title that describes so much of our Christian life. It is titled My Almost for His Highest (a satire on the famous Oswald Chambers book). Then, she sent a list of “realistic hymns.” Here are some, which lead to today’s video:
Take My Life and Let Me Be
He’s Quite a Bit to Me
When the Saints Go Sneaking In
Pillow of Ages, Fluffed for Me
My Hope Is Built on Nothing Much
I’m Fairly Certain That My Redeemer Lives
Above Average Is Thy Faithfulness
Spirit of the Living God, Fall Somewhere Near Me
Blest Be the Tie That Doesn’t Cramp My Style
[HT: Barb Peil]
Now to a hilarious send-up of bad worship songs.
Can you come up with some of your own?
Andrew Budek-Schmeisser
Propelled by stale beer he did lurch
down the aisle and to my pew,
and then beside me chose to perch
and thus did change my point of view.
When in service hands were raised
by each and every supplicant,
I learned that the Lord could be praised
by those who lacked deodorant,
and though he hiccupped through the hymns,
his voice gave his heart its all,
and with support, perhaps, of angel-wings
he made it to the altar-call
and proved him better man than I,
for much abased, he chose to try.
Deborah Raney
Andrew, that was a full sermon right there. Thank you.
Jan Rogers Wimberley
I love this, Andrew.
Those in the pew
Often need review
What God can do
For more for a few
To bring life anew.
By his grace too.
Cathy Van Atta
Is it just me, or was this fun? It made me want to throw up.
Gordon Palmer
Yes to both, Cathy.
Sy Garte
Amen Cathy. I found it painful. For me, worship music is holy, and I simply cannot laugh at it, although I understand the target was something else.
Steven Stoops
It is satire on the sad state of many churches today, Cathy. I agree with you but it sent me to prayer for the Church, perhaps that was the intent of the artists. I hope, anyway.
I wrote an article yesterday on the sad state of elections, perhaps the sad state of churches in the US is the reason we have to go into the polling booths and hold our nose when we vote this coming November.
Jan Rogers Wimberley
Thank you Steven…it is descriptive of many who claim the name but don’t enter the game hearing the coach of fame.
It also makes me pray for the American church, primarily.
Gordon
Pick a hymnal, any hymnal and at least every other page. Some irreverent guys in my youth group thought we were funny changing lyrics in hymns.
Did so with pop/rock songs, too
“Goodbye, goodbye, I don’t know why you say Hello, I say Goodbye “
Andrew, very nice poem.
Jana Gustafson
I love how a knife can be slipped into the heart when wrapped in humor. Thank you for sharing.
Kayla Lawrence
I’ve listed the songs from an two different kinds of honesty separately.
My Worth Is Not in Pitch or Tone
You’re a Good, Good Repeat Listener
Sometimes Trust, and, If You Want to, Obey
37 Reasons
Gordon Palmer
Good ones, Kayla. Love 37 Reasons.
Gordon Palmer
So funny and painful. Thanks for sharing that.
At Ease Christian Soldiers.
I felt guilty just writing that.
Maureen Miller
“Oh wilted love that let me go… “
The lament of a forlorn lover.
💔🤣💔
Bill Hendricks
Don’t forget. . .
While Shepherds Washed Their Socks By Night
I was Sinking Deep in Sin. . .Wheee!
When the Rollers Are Curled Up Yonder
Savior Like a Shepherd Feed Me
Sleep in Heavenly Peas
A Mighty Fortress Is Our Church
O Sing, My Sole, Your Shoemaker’s Praise
Marybeth Davis
This is too funny and painfully accurate. I’m going to have to lovingly subject my songwriter sister to this.
SUSAN SAGE
This was funny at first, but then tears came. How many times have songs been sung without any consideration of the words by yours truly. It’s a good thing worship is not only about music! But it does challenge me to make sure I’m serious about the words I’m singing. I believe God is!
Ava Archie
Steve Laube – “…hank you for being here & speaking up!) today!! (Anne Hathaway -Princess Diaries). I appreciate you.
Sally Valentine
How about the writer’s song, I Love to Sell (for a lot of money) the Story?
Kayla Lawrence
*wide eyes* ooh, when I’m at church, whose story am I there to think about??
Felicia Harris-Russell
Genius. Love these!! 🙂
OLUSOLA SOPHIA ANYANWU
Lovely!
Have a blessed Friday, Steve!
Blessings.
