English seems to be a crazy language with no rhyme or reason, until one takes the time to dig a little deeper into word origins and history. In 1066, William of Normandy, a French speaker, conquered England, and for four hundred years the official language of England was French (a Latin-based language). Talk about changing the course of the English-speaking world. Any time people are conquering or being conquered, language changes and adapts.
When an English speaker, or those learning English, understands that English has regular patterns, and they learn what sounds the combinations of letters make and when these combinations can be used, English is much easier to write.
Once my English Language Acquisition/English as a Second Language students learned this, their academic lives were much more comfortable.
