Enjoy this incredible performance of the “The Entertainer” on a classical guitar.
Richard Smith is one of the USA’s greatest players, named to the National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame in 2009. He makes this look so easy! (Note the series of chords and notes at the 2:27 mark.) By the way, the fellow sitting next to him during the performance is the legendary player Tommy Emmanuel.
I tried to teach myself classical guitar back in my college days. Spent almost three years at it, working through the Berklee College of Music series of books (click here). I needed another 15 years of effort to be any good. Therefore, when watching someone like this it is awe inspiring. What he does in this “simple” performance is absolutely incredible.
I read somewhere that Richard Smith’s secret is this:
He practices eight hours a day.
Might there be a lesson to us all when it comes to perfecting our writing craft?

Very cool. The guy to Richard’s right cracked me up though.

That was fabulous! I spent a few years with Mel Bey’s books and my guitar but would have needed about 100 more years to practice (at 20 minutes per day) to get any good….or longer, lacking the basic musical talent needed to be successful….

Well, knock me over. That’s tough even on piano. Thanks, Steve!

Wow, a sanding O from Tommy Emmanuel! Thanks for the fun.

Do you still pick up your guitar once in a while, Steve?
I reclaimed mine last year after several decades of neglect. It has became a sweet outlet for me when I run out of words, smoothing my rough edges like river water over stones.
I doubt I’ll ever master it, but it helps fill the bucket of my soul so I can share with others.

Nice playing!
