In case you are wondering, this is in Greece. Fira, Santorini.

I am not a city boy,
of that I am quite sure;
critters are my pride and joy,
and I smell vaguely of manure.
Days start ‘fore cock-a-doodle-doo,
and end when sun goes down,
and it’s really best that you
don’t take me into town,
’cause I don’t have the patience for
swells’ patronizing lip
when for gals I hold the door,
and the Colt upon my hip
will mark me as Primitive Man,
which is, I guess, just what I am.

This describes my farming family – plain good people. And your comment came in before sunrise. Love it. Sharing your poem with my family.

I’m so glad you enjoyed this, Cathy, and honoured by your sharing it.

Live by the sea and work from home 🤪

I knew instantly where that was, Thira. I have climbed up from the old port on the back of a donkey that alternated by trying to perch me into the sea and scrub me against the mountainside. It was a memorably frightening experience.
Worth doing precisely once, notwithstanding the view from the top being the definition of breathtaking.
Susan Baggott
Since the lower level by the sea looks like it’s only a port, I’d rather live on top of the cliff with stunning sea views writing from my home office overlooking the sea. Stunning views!

Thomas is right. Those switchbacks give a clue about how steep that mountain is. Commuting between sea and city (which is not at the sea, but on top of the mountain) is not feasible. I am more a water than a mountain person, so I would find a nice place in the port, and write a dozen books or so, when not fishing or tooling around the sea. I lived in Italy for a decade, and know the general area. Natural, (and human) beauty abounds.

After a long morning of fishing I had to haul my catch of the day up that hill to supply local restaurants, I might retire early to Milan.

By the sea…just looking at those switchbacks makes me dizzy.

There we go, amending the options. figuring out a way to have it our way. Yeah, the picture could fool us and we’d have to withdraw our decision. Big-time switchbacks on backpacking trails. Grand Canyon. Now I live in the city of Green Bay but hit the highway to church and Bible studies and visiting homebound saints. So it’s not nearly as bad as many cities here or abroad.

When I look at this picture, I first think of the people of North Carolina who had all their homes and livelihoods swept away by the rains and wind of Helene. Then I think of the people of the Los Angeles area who’ve had both lost to the fires. The picture is a reminder that we are not in control; God is. And we should pray for all of them and help them as we can equally.

And, Thomas, I wish I’d been wish you there. Gotta experience stuff like that to thank God for what we put up with here. I had to slow down to 60 instead of 70 mpl because of light snow. 🤨

Large tenders transport thousands of people from the cruise ships to the old port. As Thomas discovered, the donkey rides up the mountain are not for the faint of heart. Modern cable cars provide a quick and easy trip up and down, making them the preferred choice of most tourists. The views of the sea from the city situated on the mountain are stunning. I would work at the higher elevation, enjoying the breathtaking views during the day, and then descend to the sea after the spectacular sunset—via the cable car.

I’ll take a house at the top so I can see the expanse of the water and a cottage at the bottom so I can hanglide down when I’m in the mood to stick my feet in the water. 🙂

Is it a bus ride up?
If so that would be the choice with a good book!!!
Bill Galbreath
Either is fine, but when is the elevator being installed?
Rita Stella Galieh
Neither!!! My sanity could not face this. So, either living or visiting here? NO! Nope. Nada. Nix. No way. NEVER, thank you very much . . .

Commute by the sea and pray I won’t get seasick, though the land commute appears to lead to the same result (seasickness).
