Fun Fridays – October 27, 2017

Today is our grandson’s 2nd birthday. (Hooray Caleb!) Someday he may enjoy math, or science, or business, or the arts, or just rule the world like he does now (hah!).

This video is for those who are fascinated by math and statistics. Who would of thought that sorting books could be so hard? (Do you shelf your books by color? Please say no.)

In my years as a bookseller we did variations of this exercise every day when new shipments arrived. They had to be sorted and placed in the right section of the store. I never thought something like this would be a factor in computer programming, as this video points out.

The next time you receive 1200 books in one shipment, you will know what to do.

I sort in a mixture of genre, series, and howcanifitonemorebookonthisshelf. I’m slightly jealous of the people who have spacious shelves and all their books in neat ordered lines. With over 400 books and only bookshelf, I’ve not been able to do that myself yet. Someday…

And that is a really cool sorting method. I love math related stuff (sometimes).

The greatest pleasure of my “idle” time is to just browse through my book shelves. Nothing in order, nothing by size, nothing to detract from the peace my books bring me. There is always a ‘gem’ hidden on those shelves which takes me back to times past and I get lost for a minute (or an hour) in my life-long love affair with words. You organize, I’ll just read!

“Takes me back” or “take me back”?

This system wouldn’t work for me. My books aren’t sorted alphabetically, and only very generally by topic. I have lots of books written by authors I’ve met and sort them by how well I know the authors. My picture books for preschoolers are sorted by the months I’ll use them. Everything else is according to category, such as writing, fiction for kids, fiction for adults, teaching, crafts, religion, cooking, etc. Those are in bookcases near where I’m most likely to use them.

Or you could just suggest they contact Amazon and get their books there and then you could go home and watch Doc Martin.
    Happy birthday, Caleb!

I don’t sort by color, lol, but I do have my own organizational quirks. Generally, I group first by author, then by release date…yeah, a little weird maybe, but as a person who remembers dates well, it works for me. I used to organize my movies this way too, but now they’re all just mixed in with the family’s.
