Singing the Slushpile Blues
I wrote a book in ninety days,
an all-consuming trial
that left me hollow-eyed and crazed,
with a vacant smile.
The edits and the rewrites,
the character spreadsheet,
the brown-study fancy-flights
in which my mind would meet
Hemingway and Faulkner,
Robbins and Susann,
folks who’d cause a mighty stir
when they called me THE MAN
and give my ego elevation
all in my imagination.
