Shocking Copyright Grab by School System – Anything a student writes as part of a class is owned, forever, by the school? So if a kid invents the idea of a better FedEx as part of a school project the school owns the idea. Or if he writes the first pages of what becomes later, the next “Harry Potter,” the school owns the idea. (?!) Unbelievable.
Christian Writers Guild Adds Publishing Division – The linked Publishers Weekly article quote me accurately. This is a logical next step in the services the Guild provides. Not sure why so many in the writing community are up in arms over it. If someone wants to pay for all services from editing to printing at least CWG is an honorable company that will do what they say they will do.

Wow. The power our government is giving itself is scary. How on earth can they claim ownership of students’ ideas? Thanks for the heads up on that one.

I always appreciate your “News You Can Use” posts! Thanks for being a watchdog. I don’t often have time to peruse sources and am thankful for your vigilance.

Steve – I didn’t home-school our older two children – I’d seen too many undereducated children coming out of early home-schooling endeavors and was NOT a fan. When our bonus baby was born 12 years after our last child, I suddenly had a different view with all the new home-school options…and all the unbelievable and frightening changes in the public school system. This is just more evidence that we’re making the right choice educating our child at home. On the other hand…does that mean if she writes the next Diary of a Wimpy Kid phenomenon, I get the rights? Hmmmm. Now there’s an idea worth considering….. 🙂
Look forward to this stuff every week.
Blessings,
Becky
