Free Webinar: How to Start Building a Rejection-Proof Author Platform

It is undeniable that readers out there who would gobble up your book if only they knew it existed. (Note the post-Thanksgiving pun?)

“Discoverability” is a buzzword that describes the effort to have those readers able to discover your book before it is published.

The more your target audience knows you exist, the more successful you will be as an author. Your mission is to connect with those readers. The more of them who know you exist, the better chance your book will sell to those who want to read it. Connecting with future readers is called “building a platform.”

Platform Building

I know the idea of building a platform may feel overwhelming. There are a thousand things to try, and most of them don’t work. How are we to build something we can’t quite figure out?

To answer that question and more, I am hosting a free webinar on Tuesday, December 6 with Thomas Umstattd Jr. to help you build a platform where you are. (Details are below the registration button below.) Thomas is the host of the Novel Marketing Podcast, where he has helped thousands of authors build platforms and sell more books. In this webinar, he’s going to share the very best platform-building practices with you, even if you feel overwhelmed and don’t have a lot of financial resources. After Thomas’ brief presentation about his “Obscure No More” course, we will both answer your questions about platform building and the publishing industry. I hope to see you there!

Money Problems?

Money is of significant importance to every one of us. Some writers live on the revenue generated by their efforts. We represent a number of clients who are the main breadwinners in their families. It is unfortunate that the role of the agent is regularly defined by the size of the deal. The film Jerry Maguire made the slick, money-centered agent into a cliche with his client shouting, “Show me …

Admittedly, today’s video is odd. But one cannot avoid the creativity. A musician writes a song around the strange meowing of his neighbor’s cat. Complete with lyrics. Enjoy! And then comment if you see a metaphor here for the writing life.

[I posted a version of this article 521 weeks ago. Amazing how true the principles remain unchanged.] There are many factors that go into the acquisition, development, and sale of a new book. But the majority of ideas never get to that point. I thought it might be helpful to review some of the most common issues we’ve run into. 1. You Won’t Do the Work Writing a novel, a nonfiction …

Book Industry Trends

Publishing is partly an exercise in guessing what might be the next surprise bestseller. Some of it is an educated guess based on certain trends we see in the industry and in society at large. Any exercise in naming these trends bears the risk of expressing the obvious or being out of date the moment they are stated. So bear with me as I tinker with some of the factors that are either influencing …

While today’s video is nine minutes long, it may be quite wonderful for many of you. (The last two minutes are a message from the artist.) Watch the decade of the 80s in worship music performed acapella. Twenty-five songs in all. Which of these are familiar to you? Good morning, friends. Mr. Happy, Steve Laube, is going to say happy things today that will warm your hearts and tickle your toes. Well, maybe not. Unfortunately some may not like this dose of reality, but to prepare you for the wild and woolly world of publishing I think you should hear it. Getting an agent to represent you isn’t a guarantee of a book contract. It is a step in that …
