Innaccurate BookScan Numbers and the Plight of the Author – Colleen Doran digs into the sales numbers listed in Amazon’s Author Central. These are based on the Nielson BookScan service also used as a bible by major publishers to determine the success of failure of your backlist titles if done by another publisher. We have LONG argued that the Nielson BookScan service does not reflect the majority of books sold. It seems this author agrees. I don’t know how often a publisher has quoted a minuscule number as the “bookscan” number of a client’s previous title saying, “those numbers are awfully weak.” Bu I have in my hand the royalty statement showing ten times that number sold. If curious it is due to the fact that Nielson BookScan can only count the sales from reporting  stores.

I Love This Post about Book Printing! – I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to the book production process. If you never watched a video on it or visited a printing plant, go to this post by Irene Gallo of Tor Books where she has a series of photos showing how the new Robert Jordan fantasy novel came off the presses.

Top 10 Rules of Space Opera – If you love space opera like I do (think Star Wars if you are unfamiliar with the term) you’ll appreciate this post by Annalee Newitz.

Note the title of this post did not say “of the year” but “for your year.” It is rare for me to recommend books on writing because there are so many good ones out there, but this one is an exception.

The spiritual foundation of the writer is critical to surviving and even thriving in the call as an artist.  Acceptable Words: Prayers for the Writer (published by Eerdmans) …

The year 2012 proved to be another wonderful year in which God blessed our family.

We welcomed a new son-in-law into our family. Joel and Jill are happy in Daegu, South Korea. Of course, we wish they lived near us, but we still keep in close touch. Attending their July wedding meant we were privileged to visit South Korea, a memorable adventure made more special by Joel's gracious …

A line from yesterday’s sermon has me thinking today:
"Don't let the events in your life define your purpose. Instead, let your God-given purpose define you and how you deal with the events that come your way."
There are a number of events in 2012 that I could share, events that might be considered “defining”. Some wonderful, some…not so much. I’m so thankful to be working with the amazing …

With today being New Year's eve we have a chance to reflect, evaluate, and celebrate the events of this past year.

Our agency was extremely busy this year closing on 118 new book contracts covering nearly 200 new books. That meant we averaged a new contract every two business days. Amazing. What makes this exciting is that, despite dour predictions, publishers …

Love Came Down at Christmas

This year I am being blessed with a stress-free Christmas. Why? Because I am spending the day with a few key people in my life who love me. Just before the Lord takes me home, these are the type of people I'll want surrounding me at my bedside.

I am responsible for the dinner, but with these people, if the steaks burn, we're fine. We'll order Chinese. Or dig something out of the freezer.

We …

What are some of the things you should ask when an agent has called to offer you representation? Here goes, in no particular order:

1) Would you go over your contract terms with me? Even though you will be reading the agency contract before signing, this is your chance to learn the main points you can expect to see.  Ask questions now. After you review the contract, don't be afraid to ask for …
