A New Book Co-authored by Gilbert Morris and Steve Laube

I’m very pleased that tomorrow, March 21, is the official publication date for my new book called Write Your First Novel.

The purpose of this book is to help those who are starting their fiction-writing journey. It teaches the basics and may give some needed help to that struggling writer.

There is a fun backstory as to how this book came about. I quote from the preface:

Many years ago, I was a brand-new editor working for Bethany House Publishers. I had some English composition classes in college but no formal education on how to write fiction. And here I was, as green as one could be, tasked to edit a new novel. It quickly became evident that I needed to start teaching myself the art and craft of fiction.

One of the first books I read on the topic was by a best-selling author, Gilbert Morris. As I devoured the material, the lights kept turning on in my mind. It was quite enlightening (pun intended).

A few years later my boss, Carol Johnson, asked me to do the editorial work on a novel called Through a Glass Darkly written by . . . Gilbert Morris. Our friendship was forged in the fire of editorial scribblings, and he honored me by dedicating the book with these words: “To Steve Laube, who made this one possible.”

After Gilbert passed away, I began thinking of a way not only to continue his legacy but also to present some of my own thoughts that I’d developed over the past thirty years as a teacher at writers conferences and in acquisitions as an editor and a literary agent. Thus began the project you are now reading.

We have paired the best of Gilbert’s book with chapters of my own. The goal here is to help brand-new writers with the basics of the art and craft of fiction. We don’t claim to possess groundbreaking secrets; but inside this slim volume, you will find the foundational building blocks on which all good fiction rests.

By the end, you should have everything needed to write your first novel.

Of course, you can order your copy from Amazon (link), but as of this writing they have not discounted the paperback yet. However, the folks over at ShopTheWord.com have it on sale for 32% off (link). Christianbook.com also has it on sale, if you prefer (link). They also have a nice 10-page slideshow preview where you can see the table of contents and some early pages. (Amazon’s “Look Inside” feature won’t be enabled until the ebook is released.)

Since I’m asked the question so often, I added an appendix titled “What Makes Christian Fiction Christian.” Hope it will add to the conversation.

Below is the wonderful cover designed by Hannah Linder Designs. You’ll also note that Jerry B. Jenkins graciously wrote a foreword. In addition, I was honored to receive eighteen endorsements from some great writers.

I hope this book helps you on your journey!

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, please enjoy the splendiferous voices of Swedish Chef, Beaker, and Animal (aka The Muppets) as they sing a stupefying rendition of “Danny Boy.” A thank you to Kim Moore for recommending it and for writing, “While writing can be joyous, sometimes it can also be a little sad; but you are not alone when you have friends who understand and will …

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote on “The Cost of Permissions vs. Fair Use” which raised more questions. Therefore, I dug up a post I did on similar concerns. I replay it here to help you navigate these issues. Remember, I’m not an intellectual property attorney; I can only point to current best practices. Steve, What are the standard fair use rules for quotes of other published …

For today’s Fun Friday, we are celebrating something early. National Pi Day is 3.14. (Get it?) This means next Tuesday is the official Pi day. This creative musician has created a song based on the numbers of Pi, assigning a key to each digit. Brilliant. And even more fun are the explanatory notes you get to read while you listen. Enjoy! I absolutely believe in the need to train the current and next generations of writers. Our world is in desperate need for Christ-infused content that can challenge and counter a broken culture. One person who is doing this every day is Brett Harris. Today, I’m delighted to present an interview with Brett. He is the bestselling author of Do Hard Things and co-founder of The Young Writer’s …

This is a mesmerizing video. It is a scene where a writer corrects their editor, no matter how many corrections are made. “No! I’m a perfect, inerrant writer! Don’t change a word!” After you watch this 34-second video, comment below. (If you cannot see the video in your email newsletter, please click through to the site to view it.)

Every book contract has a clause that reads something along these lines: If permission from others is required for publication of any material contained in the Work or for exercise of any of the rights conferred by this Agreement, Author shall obtain such permissions at Author’s expense, in a form acceptable to Publisher, and shall deliver such permissions to the Publisher as part of the complete …

“It’s a Southern Thing” has many hilarious takes on the Southern United States. “Double names” is one of them. Enjoy. Then tell us a local or regional idiosyncrasy in your part of the world that may sound “foreign” to a visitor. For example, in Arizona we know how to pronounce Mogollon Rim. Do you? President’s Day – 2023

In the U.S., today is a national holiday, Presidents’ Day. Originally designed to be a celebration of Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays (February 22 and February 12 respectively), it has become a more general day to recognize our presidents. I find history to be fascinating, especially when learning or being reminded of tidbits from the past. Some are not pleasant. Did you know? John …

“If you give a man a fish, he will be hungry tomorrow. If you teach a man to fish, he will be richer forever.” If you teach a fish to play soccer . . .
