Changes in the Agency

The Greek philosopher Plato, in quoting Heraclitus, wrote, “Everything changes and nothing stands still.” Some say it another way, “The only constant is change.”

In 2016 Dan Balow started a small publishing company called Gilead Publishing, which he has been overseeing in his “spare time” while simultaneously being a great literary agent.

After many long conversations, it became apparent, as Gilead Publishing has grown (released 30 new titles this year alone), that Dan could no longer do both with excellence and has decided to depart The Steve Laube Agency at the end of this month.

We have already begun transitioning clients to new management in-house, and with Dan’s help the process has been very smooth.

I will personally miss having Dan to kick around on a regular basis. Seriously, for the last five years he made a significant mark with his insights, support, and continued commitment to our industry and helped shepherd dozens of new books into the market.

Dan’s final official blog post will run tomorrow.

_____

We lose one agent, we gain a junior agent! Thomas and Margaret Umstattd had their first baby last week! (A baby girl.)

Congratulations to their family. An exciting time for them.

Pray for the baby’s health and Margaret’s recovery. As for Thomas? Pray for sleep.

Of Making Many Books There Is No End

This past week Bowker, the company that issues ISBN numbers for published books, released their annual statistics. They broke out the numbers for self-published books and revealed a stunning statistic. (If you want the history and explanation of the ISBN, read my scintillating post on the topic here. Each country issues their own ISBNs; Bowker is the one for the U.S.) The total number of ISBNs …

Stefan Xidas has Down Syndrome and a dream of singing the National Anthem before a Chicago Cubs baseball game. His wish came true a month ago. And, as promised, he now has raised over $20,000 for Special Olympics at this GoFundMe page. This one simply gave me a joy-filled smile. Hope it does the same for you. The full song is below in a second video. Dreams can come true.

Words That Still Get Misused

The infographic below from GrammarCheck.com is a fantastic reminder of commonly misused words. They did miss one. I have to pause every time before I write “affect” or “effect.” Vocabulary.com reads, “Most of the time, you’ll want affect as a verb meaning to influence something and effect for the something that was influenced. The difference between affect and …

Integrity in All Things

The issue of integrity, or lack thereof, has reared its head within our community of Christian writers. (A link to the article “Sexual Harassment Uncovered at Christian Writing Conferences.”) It is a time of sorrow. Many have been hurt, and the heart aches to hear and read the stories. It is ugly, horrible, and that’s just about what we know. It is inexcusable. Innocent lives forever changed. Our …

The following are not original. Collected from the Internet with glee. Enjoy! Feel free to come up with your own in the comments below. There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer. When asked to define “great” he said, “I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, …
