Fun Fridays – July 29, 2022

The brilliant Tom Lehrer wrote this song where the lyrics are from the “Elements” in the Periodic Table. Today’s video shows him performing it live in Copenhagen in 1967.

Amazing. Be sure to wait to see what he does after the applause!

By the way, he was a math professor at MIT, Harvard, Wellesley, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. Read about him on this Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Lehrer.
The lyrics to his songs can be found at this link: https://tomlehrersongs.com/

(For some reason the video has a ticking clock sound in the last few seconds.)

The Power of Discernment

Some years ago, I overheard a clerk in a religious bookstore say to a customer, “These ideas are dangerous!” While I appreciate efforts to guide readers to helpful books, I don’t believe we as readers should live in fear of ideas. For instance, if I were gullible enough to agree with everything I read and see, I might be: Ingesting pills that supposedly contain vegetables and …

5 Questions a NonFiction Proposal Must Answer

All novelists will have to wait until next week’s blog which will address fiction proposals. Today’s topic is nonfiction. What is the Big Idea? Trying to find something unique and never before addressed in book form is nearly impossible. But each proposal needs to be clear what the book is about. You’d be amazed how many proposals I’ve seen where they try to hide the “pay-off.” If the book is …

Since there are five “2s” in today’s date (07/22/2022), I thought I’d provide 10 quotes to lighten your day. None are original, so don’t blame me! ____________ When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane. It is not my fault that I never learned to accept responsibility! Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let him sleep. Ham and eggs—a day’s work …

My 10 Favorite Writer Movies

I would rather read than watch a movie; but my wife, the lovely Robin, is a lover of movies. So I’ve seen more than a few. I lean toward comedy and away from fantasy. And far away from horror. And I especially enjoy an occasional movie about a writer or the writing life. So, since I know that some readers of this blog have nothing else to do with their time, I’d like to offer a Top Ten List of my …

The Most Common Grammar Errors I See

Dear Tamela: Thank you for sending this brilliant, life-changing manuscript! I laughed. I cried. I sent a copy to my mother.  But alas, on page 214, we found one misuse of plural possessive. Instead of parents’, the author wrote parent’s. So we decline to publish this novel. Sincerely, Laughing and Crying Editor Wrote No One Ever! I open with this fictitious letter to emphasize that minor errors …

21 Influential Books

There is a shelf in our living room where I have placed the books that had the most influence on my spiritual growth. I call them my “Punctuation Marks” because in a metaphoric way some books were a comma, some an exclamation point, and some a period or full stop. The beauty of having them all in one place is the visual reminder of those moments when God reached out through the pages of creative …
