The Power of Discernment

By Tamela Hancock Murrayon July 28, 2022

Some years ago, I overheard a clerk in a religious bookstore say to a customer, “These ideas are dangerous!”

While I appreciate efforts to guide readers to helpful books, I don’t believe we as readers should live in fear of ideas. For instance, if I were gullible enough to agree with everything I read and see, I might be:

  1. Ingesting pills that supposedly contain vegetables and fruit so I don’t have to eat vegetables or fruit.
  2. Drinking an energy elixir.
  3. Using a specific brand of shampoo to improve my hair.
  4. Feeding a pet treats to lessen the animal’s anxiety.
  5. Ordering pizza at midnight. (See: Overeating.)
  6. Applying a miracle cream on my skin to enhance my appearance.
  7. Patronizing a restaurant serving too much food drizzled in melted cheese and dripping a trail of salt and oil. (See: Overeating.)
  8. Spraying wonder tape on every broken object in the house because it looks fun and cool.

I’m not saying that nothing we see or read has value or that none of these ideas and products work. I am saying that we, as adult readers and consumers, can exercise discernment.

Consider vegetable pills. I guess you’ll be hungry if you consume all your fruits and vegetables in pill form instead of eating five to six cups of fruits and vegetables a day. Then you just might be looking for potato or corn chips to eat. Not only is chip form not the best way to eat vegetables, but potatoes and corn are, at best, starchy vegetables to be consumed in moderation. How about buying squash (which is a fruit) and onions. Rinse and peel, then slice and dice. Boil in a pan until soft, then transfer to a frying pan to sauté in a small amount of butter. Serve.

Admittedly, cooking this way is an involved process, so I like to make what my mother called a” mess” of squash. But what a joy to eat over gulping a pill!

In a hurry? Buy plain frozen veggies in a bag you can microwave for five minutes and serve.

You might say, “What’s all this talk about vegetables?”

I share my thoughts to illustrate a process you already know: discernment. When you see information that doesn’t seem correct, you have the power to discard it as rubbish. Just because you read something doesn’t mean you agree with it. Or that you are obliged to agree.

To be an informed author, be a well-read reader. Read carefully and thoughtfully. Then take your knowledge and share it through introspective nonfiction and brilliant fiction. Your readers will thank you.

5 Questions a NonFiction Proposal Must Answer

All novelists will have to wait until next week’s blog which will address fiction proposals. Today’s topic is nonfiction. What is the Big Idea? Trying to find something unique and never before addressed in book form is nearly impossible. But each proposal needs to be clear what the book is about. You’d be amazed how many proposals I’ve seen where they try to hide the “pay-off.” If the book is …

Since there are five “2s” in today’s date (07/22/2022), I thought I’d provide 10 quotes to lighten your day. None are original, so don’t blame me! ____________ When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane. It is not my fault that I never learned to accept responsibility! Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let him sleep. Ham and eggs—a day’s work …

I would rather read than watch a movie; but my wife, the lovely Robin, is a lover of movies. So I’ve seen more than a few. I lean toward comedy and away from fantasy. And far away from horror. And I especially enjoy an occasional movie about a writer or the writing life. So, since I know that some readers of this blog have nothing else to do with their time, I’d like to offer a Top Ten List of my …

Dear Tamela: Thank you for sending this brilliant, life-changing manuscript! I laughed. I cried. I sent a copy to my mother.  But alas, on page 214, we found one misuse of plural possessive. Instead of parents’, the author wrote parent’s. So we decline to publish this novel. Sincerely, Laughing and Crying Editor Wrote No One Ever! I open with this fictitious letter to emphasize that minor errors …

21 Influential Books

There is a shelf in our living room where I have placed the books that had the most influence on my spiritual growth. I call them my “Punctuation Marks” because in a metaphoric way some books were a comma, some an exclamation point, and some a period or full stop. The beauty of having them all in one place is the visual reminder of those moments when God reached out through the pages of creative …
