Cultivating Gratitude, Rest, and Contentment in Writing

As the year draws to a close and the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time for content creators to pause, reflect, and cultivate gratitude. In our fast-paced world, where the demands of content creation often leave us in a constant state of hustle, the joy of gratitude can be easily overlooked. However, taking a moment to be thankful for the connections, opportunities, and creative ideas we’ve experienced throughout the year can be a game-changer. I want to offer practical ways to rest, recover, and refresh before diving headfirst into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the new year and the following seasons.

In the whirlwind of content creation, it’s easy to become consumed by the pursuit of success, numbers, and constant progress. However, the practice of gratitude offers a profound shift in perspective. Instead of relentlessly chasing what’s next, gratitude invites us to celebrate what we’ve already achieved and the connections we’ve formed. It encourages us to recognize and appreciate the value we’ve created in the lives of our audience and ourselves.

One of the most potent aspects of gratitude is its ability to help us celebrate our accomplishments. As writers or speakers, we’re constantly setting goals, launching new projects, and striving for growth. In this relentless pursuit, it’s common to downplay successes, always looking ahead to the next challenge or summit. Gratitude reminds us to stop and acknowledge how far we’ve come, the milestones we’ve reached, and the impact we’ve had on our audiences.

For me, I always try to find meaningful ways to celebrate the work and invite others to join in. I keep confetti cannons in my office drawer and let my kiddos fire them off when I accomplish a goal, hit a new sales record, or pass a significant milestone. My advice? Make it fun and share it.

And, in the whirlwind of holiday preparations and the hustle and bustle of the season, writers and authors often find themselves grappling with stress and exhaustion. It’s crucial to acknowledge the need for rest, recovery, and refreshment before launching into the final stretch of the year. Before you tune me out on the ol’ rest lecture, it is beyond important to connect the dots between contentment, gratitude, and the ability to rest. It’s easy to strive, set aside rest, and keep hammering. But don’t. Take it from me. Approaching Advent from a place of deep and abiding rest could be just what you need.

Before diving headfirst into holiday content and year-end projects, take a moment to step back and reflect. Review the year’s accomplishments, challenges, and the impact of your work. Consider what you’re thankful for, both personally and professionally. Reflect on the positive aspects of your journey, and recharge. Make self-care a priority during this season.

Whether it’s spending quality time with loved ones, taking a relaxing break, or indulging in activities that bring you joy, self-care is essential for replenishing your creative well. Set clear boundaries and plan your work strategically. This will help you manage seasonal challenges without overwhelming yourself. Ensure that you have a realistic schedule that allows for both work and downtime.

Cultivating gratitude as a content creator is not just a seasonal practice—it’s a year-round strategy for success. It enables us to appreciate our accomplishments, cherish the connections we’ve made, and find inspiration in the opportunities and ideas that continue to unfold. As we approach the holiday season, take a moment to rest, recover, and refresh. Embrace the grace of gratitude, and allow it to guide you toward real rest. Remember, success is not only about the destination but also the appreciation of the journey itself–enjoying God’s gifts and honoring Him with them.

A Writer’s Prayer of Thanks for Bible Versions

God, thank you for the hundreds of Bible translations that are available to me, and for their forerunners throughout history, who have made your precious Word understandable and accessible, often at great personal cost. Thank you for the 72 Jewish elders recruited by Ptolemy II who translated the Old Testament from Hebrew into Greek. Thank you for William Tyndale, who gave his life to “write …

With all the discussion about marketing platforms, some authors think the only thing standing in the way of being published successfully is the lack of a large-enough, personal promotional machine. It is important, along with several other items affecting whether a book is published by a traditional publisher; but there is one powerful item that is rarely discussed or mentioned. Sometimes books …

Interrupting God

I find it humorous when someone brings up a list of questions that they would like to ask God face-to-face when they get a chance. It is funny because the statement assumes that we would have a back-and-forth discussion, as we insert “Yeah, but what about …” between his responses to our questions. If there is a heavenly Q&A opportunity, if indeed we could manage to pick ourselves off the …

I learned recently that my agent—the man, the myth, the legend, Steve Laube—speaking at a writers conference, quoted something I’d said in a recent conference keynote. Yes, you read that right! The Great One actually quoted me! Me! And it wasn’t the usual “Can you believe anyone is that stupid?” sort of allusion. It was in a favorable context, as though I’d said something of value. Well, slap my …

Lord God Adonai, I am about to write. I have nothing to say, nothing to offer. I am a poor writer, and an even poorer Christian. And yet I must try to find words that will bring into being something that has never been before. Help me, Lord. Inspire me. Empower me. Flow through me. Grant that I may write better than I can write, and thus know that all the honor and glory and thanks belong to you, …

Some people are so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good. – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., was quite a guy. A prominent, influential physician and writer, his friends included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He was born in 1809 and died in 1894. His son was Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., who fought in some of the bloodiest battles of the …

While many writers set out writing for the sake of writing, without much thought to an endgame, Christian writers have biblical foundations in their lives and work, which affect how they do things. Today I will look at one chapter of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians as a possible roadmap to being the kind of author that reflects Christ in what you do. In the first three chapters of Ephesians, the …

Recently, I was on a work trip to Richmond, VA, to visit the International Mission Board. As a military missionary, the work of vocational mission training is at my very core. My heart is for the nations, and I pray often that revival will sweep through the warrior class today. While touring the building, I came across a wall of honor. These carefully curated memorials cause onlookers to pause and …
