Staying Healthy Over the Holidays

Closeup chocolate

Now that we are in the midst of the holidays, it’s easy to lose sight of keeping our bodies in top form. Since we in publishing have sedentary jobs, we must be vigilant about our health. Even though many of us work at home, we still have parties at church, our outside jobs, our spouse’s work, clubs, and other food-laden events.

I’ve already been challenged by two events: Thanksgiving (as has everyone else), followed by a trip to Connecticut to see my in-laws. For a visit of less than two days, my dear mother-in-law had for my husband and me:

1.) Hershey kisses

2.) nuts

3.) a box of cupcakes

4.) two boxes of cookies

5.) Haagen-Dazs chocolate chip ice cream

6.) Ben and Jerry’s cheesecake brownie ice cream

7.) an apple pie

8.) cranberry bread

9.) banana bread

10.) sodas

11.) Jarlsberg cheese served with crackers

12.) applesauce she made herself (Okay, we were obligated to try this and it was yummy.)

Since she is 88, we don’t ask her to cook and since it’s too difficult time-wise for me to prepare dishes at her house, we ate out for every meal. No matter where you go, restaurants serve way too much food.

My guess is if you are visiting family over the holidays, this scenario sounds all too familiar.

I staved off many unwanted calories by:

1.) not ordering dessert at any restaurant

2.) ordering half sandwiches at Panera Bread

3.) having the waitress box side dishes before the meal to take home so I only ate the entree

4.) refusing snacks

5.) avoiding all sodas

I am also hoping to keep up my regular gym habits as much as I can and eating at home as often as possible over the holidays.

I love a delicious cookie as much as anyone else, but I never regret not overeating. Feeling more energetic and productive in and out of the office during the Christmas season is its own reward.

But it’s OK to indulge just a little. Especially if it’s homemade applesauce.

Wishing you a Merry and Healthy Christmas!

Staying Sane Over the Holidays

Just because you're a writer doesn't mean you get a pass over the holidays. Many writers are contract-bound by December and early January deadlines, while other writers have self-imposed deadlines to keep their careers moving. The late arrival of Thanksgiving has also put a monkey wrench into many of our plans. I don't know about you, but I just can't get in the mood -- or find the time -- for …

I have many people and circumstances to be thankful for but on this Thanksgiving Day, I am going to focus on you, our blog readers.

Thank you for being faithful to stop by every weekday, not only to see my posts, but the posts by Steve, Dan, and Karen. I can safely say all of us hope we edify and inform you -- and even entertain you once in awhile.

Thank you for having the courage to make …

One more day and many of us will be seated around a table, mouths watering as we watch Dad or Grampa or Hubby carve a steaming, golden turkey. As I thought about the many Thanksgiving celebrations we’ve shared in my family--days of fellowship and laughter, gratitude and blessing--I remembered singing that wonderful old hymn, “We Gather Together.”

So join me, you lovers of words, you craftsman …

Yesterday, Steve Laube asked you to thank those who have the most direct connection with readers of books...the retail bookseller.  Steve has Christian retailing in his DNA.  He worked for Berean Christian stores, managing their Phoenix, Arizona locations and was named the Christian Booksellers Association Store of the year in 1989.  You win that award because you balance the business and ministry …

Thank a Bookseller

With this being Thanksgiving week I thought it appropriate to urge you to take a moment, visit your local bookseller, and say, "Thank you for supporting books!"

As I wrote elsewhere, it is tough to be in the retail side of the business. Online sales, rising rent and utilities, rising salaries, etc. are competition enough. I know many booksellers who are in the business for …

by Steve Laube

This past weekend I had the privilege, once again, to attend and participate in the C.S. Lewis Foundation’s Fall retreat in Houston.

Not a typical writers conference it focuses on the extraordinary contribution of Lewis and his fellow Inklings and ultimately a celebration of the Arts in light of the incarnation of Christ. The speakers were extraordinary. They included:
Devin …

One Word to Increase Your Conference Enjoyment

The past couple of conferences I attended felt more relaxed. Of course, “relaxed” is a relative term in relation to conferences. I am so very grateful that people want to see me, talk to me, meet with me, dine with me. Don’t go away! Without you, I wouldn’t be blessed with this career. Thank you. But I talked to a couple of people at ACFW who admitted to me that they …

......

After such excitement, I was ready to go home and relax, then get back into my office routine and the new adventure of living as an empty nester with my husband, John. He has worked as a civilian at the Department of Defense for 33 years and is now the Deputy Director of Contract Policy for the Naval Sea Systems Command.

I am writing this post on Monday night, the day of the …

The First Novel I Ever Read

It was the summer of 1970…I was dreading a long family car trip mainly because I was 14, I had braces on my teeth and was starting high school in the fall.  I was required to be full of dread.

The big hits on pop radio that summer were "Mama Told Me Not to Come" (Three Dog Night), "Close to You" (Carpenters), "Everything is Beautiful" (Ray Stevens), "The Long and Winding Road" by the Beatles, …
