Another Writer’s Hymn

Another Writer’s Hymn
(based on and drawing from a hymn by William Freeman Lloyd)

__________

My times are in your hand;
my God, I wish them there;
my life, my soul, my words,
I leave entirely to your care.

My times are in your hand,
whatever I may do;
to write, to publish, soon or late,
as may seem best to you.

My times are in your hand;
I need not rush or fear;
I know your hand will never cause
your child a needless tear.

My times are in your hand;
I’ll wait and trust your plan,
and know my writing hopes and dreams
are safely in your hands.

I found this analysis of the Beach Boys’ song “Good Vibrations” to be absolutely fascinating. This seven-minute breakdown shows how a creative genius could raise the level of the craft beyond where others had been before. An example for all creatives out there. Enjoy!

Stakes Versus Conflict in Your Novel

Recently, an author asked me about stakes versus conflict in a novel, and so I thought this blog post might be beneficial. “Stakes” means what is at risk, what will happen, or what will be lost if the character doesn’t meet certain goals. Stakes are presented to make the reader care about the protagonist meeting a major goal. If stakes are low, it’s hard to maintain reader interest. For example: …

More Carrots and Sticks

Last week I opened a can of worms, to use a cliché—and one should never use clichés, because they’re old hat. I asked some of my favorite authors (and clients, as it happens) whether they motivate themselves as writers with “carrots” (i.e., some kind of reward) or “sticks” (an external discipline of some kind). The responses were so many and varied—and enlightening—that I decided to follow that …

Today we are going to talk about promotional tours for your book and which works better, a blog tour or a podcast tour. We’ll also talk about why podcast tours are replacing blog tours and what to do about it. What is a blog tour? A blog tour is when you (or your marketing/PR person) schedule a series of blog posts about you and your book.  These posts take a few forms: Author Interview – The …
