Last May we had some fun with puns. Let do some more. None of the below are original. They have been gathered from a variety of sources online. Care to add some of your own?

25 Book Puns

  1. Metaphors be with you.
  2. Brontë? What a breath of fresh Eyre.
  3. ISBN thinking about you.
  4. Never read Fitzgerald? You Gatsby kidding me!
  5. Broken pencils are pointless.
  6. Bad spelling makes me [sic].
  7. What do you call 2,000 mockingbirds? Two kilo mockingbird.
  8. Why do words and punctuation end up in court? To be sentenced.
  9. Forever Jung.
  10. I’m reading a book about antigravity and it’s impossible to put down.
  11. You’re nothing but a Wilde thing.
  12. What building has the most stories? The library.
  13. What’s the longest word in the dictionary? “Smiles” because there’s a mile between each s.
  14. Libraries are good for circulation.
  15. What’s the difference between cats and a comma? Cats have claws at the end of their paws, and commas are a pause at the end of a clause.
  16. Why is John Milton a terrible guest at game night? Because when he’s around, there’s a pair of dice lost.
  17. Dystopian novels are so 1984.
  18. The book about the Matterhorn had quite a cliff hanger.
  19. What dinosaur knows a lot of synonyms? A thesaurus.
  20. The high-school music teacher was controversial for having his students read band books.
  21. Writers are cold because they’re surrounded by drafts.
  22. Leave poetry to the prose.
  23. What does one library book say to the other? “Can I take you out?”
  24. Bookworms take shelfies.
  25. Seven days without a pun makes one weak.

The next elements are meant to encourage the agent and editor to read your book. These are worth crafting because, otherwise, your intended audience may never go past the first page. When I say “hook” in this post, I am not referring to hooking your reader with the first page of your story. Here, I mean an element in the proposal, the reason your reader will want to read your book instead of or in …

Write for Narcissists

Every reader is a narcissist. Hold on, there. Don’t get all mad and sassy yet. Seriously, I think it’s true. For example, I read several memoirs every year. And many of them are about writers …

Last week the Lifeway Christian Store chain announced the closure of all 170 of their stores by the end of this calendar year. This is follows the closure of the Family Christian Stores in 2017 (240 locations). And in 2012 the Cokesbury chain closed (35 stores). Over 400 total locations closed in seven years. You may also recall that Borders closed 500 locations in 2011. (I started my career in …

With two of our three daughters still in the dance world and the third in the music world as a pianist, I could not help but enjoy today’s video. It takes hard work to choreograph a mistake-filled ballet. This piece is called the “Mistake Waltz,” which Jerome Robbins choreographed in 1956. It happens to be our ballet-teaching daughter’s birthday today. Happy Birthday, …

Each author is unique, so are proposals. This series doesn’t cover all possible categories but highlights many challenging components of book-proposal writing. My goal is to help authors know what editors and agents want to see and to offer tips on how to get out of the slush pile and into the “must publish” queue! Another benefit I hope this series will provide is the encouragement to move …

Not everyone is a grammar nazi and spelling tyrant as I am. And some people write so brilliantly that spelling and grammar mistakes are more easily overlooked. I don’t know any of those people, but I’m told they exist. The vast majority of writers will do themselves a huge favor if they do their best to use precise language, grammar, and punctuation in everything they produce. Below are a few …
