Rogets-Thesaurus

On this last day of 2013, I think the best use of this space is to offer up my favorite quotes related to books, writing or from authors. Without further delay from the fun, here they are:

“What’s another word for thesaurus?” (Steven Wright)

“This is the sixth book I’ve written, which isn’t bad for a guy who’s only read two.” (George Burns)

“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some hire PR officers.” (Daniel J. Boorstin)

“Only one thing is impossible for God: To find any sense in any copyright law on the planet.”  (Mark Twain)

“When I am dead, I hope it may be said: ‘His sins were scarlet but his books were read.” (Hilliare Belloc)

“In Australia, not reading poetry is the national pastime.”  (Phyllis McGinley)

“They say such nice things about people at their funerals that it makes me sad that I’m going to miss mine by just a few days.”   (Garrison Keilor)

“The most important thing for poets to do is to write as little as possible.”  (TS Eliot)

“My reputation grows with every failure.”  (George Bernard Shaw)

“The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction has to make sense.”  (Tom Clancy)

“Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend and inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” (Groucho Marx)

“What would I do if I had only six months left to live? I’d type faster.” (Isaac Asimov)

“The only imaginative fiction being written today is income tax returns.” (Herman Wouk)

“Once you’ve put one of his books down, you simply can’t pick it up again.” (Mark Twain talking about Henry James).

“What other culture could have produced someone like Hemmingway and not seen the joke?”  (Gore Vidal)

I looked back some of my Tuesday blog posts and thought I might be getting too serious, so I wanted to lighten it up a bit with some practical, helpful information that should help you navigate and understand the complicated world of publishing.

Here are words you might hear in relation to publishing or describing a particular book and its real meaning:

“A must-read” – Acquisitions editor …

My Amazing Fake Day

I've been intrigued by some blogs and articles about how Facebook makes people depressed because everyone else's lives seem so perfect. I hope that no one thinks the sum of my life is reflected in two recent Facebook posts that my uncle killed a bear on our family farm in Southern Virginia and here in Northern Virginia, we are host a family of walking stick bugs. I took great comfort in the …

Since most readers of this blog are writers, this might just ruin your day.

A company called Narrative Science started as a research project with Northwestern University computer science and journalism students. (The Medill School of Journalism is arguably the best in the country)  It was called StatsMonkey.

StatsMonkey was a computer program that automatically generated a usable text recap …

I thought I'd have a little fun today with the differences we experience in our house when getting ready for a business trip.

My husband preparing for travel:
1.) Make sure hair is freshly cut.
2.) The night before, pack bags. Wife has already ironed shirts and will be folding them to pack.
Me preparing for travel:
1.) Wash all clothes down to the last item so family will have clean laundry …

Misused Words and Phrases

The English language is full of persnickety quirks, the most despicable of which are buzz words. Words and phrases we’ve decided work better than plain speech. Why say what you mean when you can just toss out a phrase that says what you want, but in such a vague and convoluted manner than people spend so much energy figuring it out that they can’t challenge you? Genius! Or how about those words …
