Fun Fridays – March 28, 2014

A delightful performance by a surprise contestant on the Italian version of “The Voice.”

To really appreciate what the judges are saying make sure to click the “cc” button (close captioned) for an English translation. (The “cc” button appears after you click play.)

The emotional reaction of the first judge and the expression of the singer of why she sings (at the six minute mark) are a joy to watch.

Have you ever received a one-star review? Or do you dread the day that might happen? Or perhaps you are hoping to be published so you can get a review. Any review. When you start receiving reviews, some of them might not be as stellar as you had hoped. So what, if anything, should you do? Good, Bad, Indifferent? When I look at reviews of sites such as Amazon, I think it’s healthy to …

Chapters: How Long is Too Long?

I’ve had a number of people ask me lately how long their chapters should be. My answer has been: “As long as they need to be.” Now, it would be nice if I could give folks the “industry-standard” answer: “Chapters should be no less than xx and no longer than xxx,” but the truth is there isn’t a real standard in the industry. And frankly, I think that’s a good thing. I’ve never been one to …

Don’t Just Do It

I don’t like the word “just”. Don’t get me wrong, “just” is a fine word, especially when used in a triple-word space in Scrabble.  It has all sorts of good uses and meanings…even used to fill time when we are thinking, along with the other great words and phrases of our culture, such as “like”, ”um”, “I mean” and ”you know.”  I simply do not like the word “just” when it is used to place limits on …

God’s Timing

Since he is a wise businessman himself, my husband almost never calls me when I’m at a conference. He knows how hectic business travel can be. But on a recent trip, he had asked me to call him when I reached the venue. Excited and pulled into a meeting immediately upon my arrival, I forgot to call. So right in the middle of a later worship service, my phone summoned me. Hubby’s special …

If you follow me on Facebook, you’ll have seen my recent pictures of the flowers that have been blooming like crazy in my yard. It happened so fast! One day the ground seemed dead and unyielding, the next green shoots popped up, and then… WHAM!https://youtu.be/-EbwAc8dkWI Flowers and flowering shrubs and trees burst forth with colors and buds and blossoms. Among the first to appear were the …

How to Be A Reader’s Favorite Author

Last week in this space, I wrote about how you could become a publisher’s favorite author (other than selling millions of books).  Today, we’ll go a little different direction and talk about what you would need to do to become a favorite author to your readers. A key difference between how you relate to a publisher and how you relate to a reader is that one is business and one is personal.  An …

Who Are You Hanging Out With?

During a recent television program, realization struck. I didn’t like anyone on the screen. So why was I spending time with them? I don’t think I’ll be returning to that program soon. When you are writing a story, you are asking your reader to hang out with your characters. For a very long time. Will they want to do that? Granted, you’ll be providing drama and conflict. For …
