Daddy is with Jesus Now

My daddy, Herman Bryce Hancock, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday. Thank you for all of your love and support after he suffered two strokes.

He was cheerful after major surgery but then experienced a second stroke and fell into a coma. Afterward, he rested peacefully and was under superb care at VCU Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, before he passed.

The world is much dimmer now without him.

Please continue to hold our family in your hearts and prayers.

As we celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the United States this week, it is my privilege to offer prayers that are timeless yet needed today more than ever. These can apply to any country. I hope you will be blessed by these prayers from The 1928 edition of The Book of Common Prayer. A Prayer for Congress. MOST gracious God, we humbly beseech thee, as for the people of these United …

40 Days with One Composition

For the last few years I’ve used the forty days of Lent as an auditory discipline. I try to listen to one collection of music during the entire season. This year’s choice was Franz Joseph Haydn’s “The Seven Last Words of our Savior on the Cross.” I listened to the string arrangement performed by the Callino Quartet. First performed in a somber setting on Good Friday …

A series of interview questions that dig into my reading life. What’s on your nightstand right now? I am an extremely eclectic reader and have dozens of books waiting for attention. In fiction I’m currently reading Run Program by Scott Meyer a science-fiction story of a newly developed artificial intelligence program that “gets out” of the lab and is now running loose on the Internet – with all …

The Year of Kindness

This past year, my colleagues in Christian publishing have treated me with immense kindness. Thank you. I wish I could say I have witnessed the same kindness in other arenas. If you follow current events even as a casual observer, I don’t need to recount the bitterness and rancor over ideas, processes, and how to deal with misdeeds. But processing debates helped me progress in my own attitudes. …

A Year in Review – A Look at 2017

I find it a healthy exercise to review the past as it can be encouraging to note progress and look at the foundation for the future. The Industry Our industry continues to create tremendous books but few new ones “break out.” It is hard to gain the attention of readers and buyers in our media-saturated society. And yet books continue to sell! It was almost a foregone conclusion, so in February …

I thought it apropos to talk about gifts during this Christmas season. There is one gift in particular that has been given to us year round. You. As a reader of this blog you give us the gift of your time, energy, and attention. According to Google Analytics there have been over 70,000 users who have visited our site more than once this year. I had no idea. If only one percent of those returnees …

A change of pace today. Do yourself a favor. Set aside 10 minutes. Turn up your speakers. Quiet your mind and heart. Close your eyes. Then play this video. The song “Alleluia” by Eric Whitaker is performed. (There is nothing to watch, only the album cover is displayed.) While you let the music wash over you, pray. Lift your burdens before the One and Only One who can help you carry …

Don’t Let Anything Happen to That Book

Awhile back I asked everyone to name a book that changed their life. Today I want you to remember a book that means a great deal to you. It doesn’t have to be the same book. My mother will tell me not to let anything happen to Uncle Arthur’s Bedtime Stories. She’s been passing off lots of objects to me for some time. As I write this, I’m cooking dinner in her harvest gold crock pot from …
